QUINTEN DOL

What: Originally a game on Nintendo's Gameboy, it gradually mutated into a Japanese TV series and trading card game.

When: Created in 1996, exploded in Australia around 1999.

Why: One cool kid somewhere started buying and battling cards, then the rest of the world gradually followed.

Chance of revival: A small group of dedicated geeks still stick to it and the Japanese creators relentlessly try in vain to revive the popularity through endless "new series" of Pokemon.
